Is a rose still a rose when it's tie-dyed? The folks at Ferrari Florist think so, and in fact say it is one of the new trends in flowers coming from Holland. The multicolored rose can be ordered in pastel colors, a range of blues that Ferrari calls the Ocean Rose, and the stronger rainbow hues pictured above.
Costing $50 for a half-dozen and $100 for a dozen, the roses are shipped overnight from Holland, "where all the new trends come out of," says owner Sharon Richardson.
She says that there is conjecture that growers there wait for the rose to get thirsty, split the bottom of the stem into quarters, then feed different-colored dyes into the stem. The rose decides how to distribute the colors in the petals.
